3 paycheck months in 2027 for biweekly pay

If you're paid every other Friday, your 2027 three-paycheck months are either April and October (first payday January 8) or January, July and December (first payday January 1, which gives 27 paychecks that year). Paid on another weekday, the months move: the table below has every biweekly schedule from Monday to Friday.

Below: how to tell which schedule you're on from your last paycheck of 2026, the exact date of each third check, what happens when January 1 is a bank holiday, the 2028 months so you can plan ahead, and a plan for the extra check so it doesn't vanish into the month.

Why some months get three paychecks

Biweekly pay means every 14 days, 26 times in a normal year (52 weeks ÷ 2). Twelve months would need only 24 checks if each month had two. The two left over have to land somewhere, so two months each year get a third payday.

A month gets three paychecks when its first payday falls on one of its first one to three days (depending on the month's length). A 31-day month with a payday on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd gets three. A 30-day month needs a payday on the 1st or 2nd. February never gets three in a normal year, and only gets them in a leap year if payday is February 1.

About every 11 years, a biweekly schedule fits 27 paydays into one calendar year instead of 26. That happens when the first payday is January 1 (or January 2 in a leap year). In 2027 the Friday schedule that starts January 1 is one of those.

We worked these out by counting forward 14 days at a time from each first payday through December 31, 2027. Your employer's payroll calendar is the final word, because holidays can move a payday by a day (more on that below). Check that the third date in your row isn't a bank holiday on your calendar; if it is, the check usually comes the business day before, which keeps it in the same month.

How to tell which schedule you're on

You don't need to wait for January. Your paydays in the rest of 2026 tell you which row is yours, because the schedule just keeps repeating every 14 days.

If one of your November 2026 paydays is…Your last 2026 payday is…Your 2027 row starts
Fri Nov 6 or Fri Nov 20Fri Dec 18Friday, Jan 1 (27 checks)
Fri Nov 13 or Fri Nov 27Fri Dec 25 (Christmas)Friday, Jan 8
Thu Nov 12 or Thu Nov 26Thu Dec 24Thursday, Jan 7
Thu Nov 5 or Thu Nov 19Thu Dec 31Thursday, Jan 14
Wed Nov 11 or Wed Nov 25Wed Dec 23Wednesday, Jan 6

Mon Nov 9 or Mon Nov 23Mon Dec 21Monday, Jan 4
Mon Nov 2 or Mon Nov 16Mon Dec 28Monday, Jan 11

The quickest way: open your last pay stub or your bank app, find the date of your last deposit, and add 14 days until you reach January 2027. If your employer has a payroll portal, the 2027 pay calendar is often posted there in December.

Your deposit can show up a day or two before the official pay date if your bank releases direct deposits early. Use the pay date on your stub, not the day the money appeared, to find your row.

The New Year's Day problem: 27 checks or 26?

The 27-check Friday schedule starts on January 1, 2027, which is New Year's Day, a federal holiday when banks are closed. Most payrolls move a holiday payday to the business day before, which here is Thursday, December 31, 2026.

That one change decides your year:

The same thing happens to the other Friday schedule in late 2026: its last payday of the year lands on Christmas Day, Friday, December 25, so most people on it are paid Thursday, December 24. That stays in December and changes nothing about 2027.

If you're on the January 1 schedule, ask payroll now which day that check will arrive. A check that lands on December 31 instead of January 1 is the money you'll be living on through mid-January, so it needs to be in your December plan, not spent on the holidays.

Does a 27th paycheck mean more money?

It depends how you're paid:

A smaller check on every payday is easy to miss until a bill bounces. If your salary is $52,000, ÷26 is $2,000 gross a check; ÷27 is $1,926, or $74 less every two weeks before tax. Our guide on turning a salary into a biweekly paycheck shows the take-home math.

A 27-check year can also nudge your tax withholding. Payroll systems usually work out withholding as if each check were one of 26 or 27, so it tends to come out close. If your year-end refund or bill matters to your budget, the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator lets you check mid-year.

2028 three-paycheck months, if you plan a year ahead

Your 2028 row follows from your 2027 one: the schedule keeps rolling. 2028 is a leap year, which is why one Tuesday schedule gets three checks in February.

How to budget the extra check

The extra check only feels extra if your regular budget is built on two checks a month. That's the setup we recommend: pay every monthly bill from the first two checks of each month, and treat the third check as free of bills. Our guide to budgeting biweekly paychecks walks through matching each bill to a check.

When the third check arrives, decide its jobs before payday, in this order:

  1. Anything overdue. A late bill, a past-due utility, a fee you're still carrying. Getting current stops more fees. If you're behind on several, see what to do first when you're behind on bills.
  2. A starter emergency fund, if you have less than one paycheck saved. One third check can get most people a long way toward a first $500 or $1,000.
  3. The next lumpy cost. Car registration, a school fee, holiday gifts, an annual subscription. The three-paycheck months are a good time to fill sinking funds for the year.
  4. Debt. The extra payment goes to the debt your plan targets: the smallest balance (snowball) or the highest rate (avalanche).
  5. Get one check ahead. Leave part of it in checking so next month's bills are paid from money you already have, not money you're waiting for.

A worked plan for 2027

Here's what one person paid every other Friday from January 8 could do with April and October. Take-home is $1,600 a check; all monthly bills are paid from the first two checks of each month.

Third checkJobAmount
Apr 30Starter emergency fund to $1,000$700
Apr 30Car registration and summer costs (sinking fund)$400
Apr 30Extra on the smallest card$300
Apr 30Left in checking (one check ahead)$200
Oct 29Holidays fund: gifts, travel, food$600
Oct 29Extra on the smallest card$500
Oct 29Left in checking (one check ahead)$500

After both, this person has a $1,000 cushion, holidays already paid for, $800 off a card and $700 of next month's bills sitting in the account before payday. None of it needed a cut to the regular budget.

On the 27-check Friday schedule, the same idea works with three extra checks. January's third check (January 29) is a good one to point at anything the holidays left on a card.

If your monthly bills need all three checks

Some budgets can't cover a month's bills from two checks, so the third check is already spent in those months. That usually means rent or the car payment takes most of one check, and the shortfall has been covered by the third check, a card or an overdraft.

Once the two-check budget covers the month, the third check becomes the most useful money you get all year. Not sure where your checks go now? The free 2-minute money leak quiz shows how much of each paycheck has no job yet.

Mistakes with three-paycheck months

Three-paycheck months questions

How many three-paycheck months are there in 2027?

Two on most biweekly schedules. On the Friday schedule that starts January 1, 2027, there are three: January, July and December, for 27 paychecks in the year.

What months have 3 paychecks in 2027 if I'm paid every other Friday?

April and October if your first 2027 payday is January 8. January, July and December if it's January 1 (July and December only, if that January 1 check is paid early on December 31, 2026).

Is 2027 a 27-pay-period year?

Only for one schedule: paid every other Friday with a payday on January 1, 2027, and only if the check isn't moved into 2026 for the holiday. Every other biweekly schedule has 26.

Do weekly paychecks have three-paycheck months?

Weekly pay gives four or five paychecks a month instead. In 2027, the five-Friday months are January, April, July, October and December, and the year has 53 Fridays. See our guide to budgeting weekly paychecks.

Do semimonthly paychecks have three-paycheck months?

No. Paid on the 15th and the last day, you get exactly 24 checks, two every month. See how to budget a bi-monthly paycheck.

Should I save the third paycheck or pay off debt?

If you have less than about $500 to $1,000 saved, put part of it there first, so the next surprise doesn't go on a card. Then send the rest to your debt plan.
